It turns out the shrews were not so much new roommates as simply burglars. They came in, vacuumed the floors, stayed two nights to torment me, and then shortly thereafter, possibly driven out by paint fumes or else lack of food. I set up a series of elaborate traps but they are long gone. Hooray?
Now I've just got to figure out how they got in and stuff it with steel wool or something.

Ugh no fun! I've been there with other rodents. Glad you have some traps set out.
I guess you don't leave enough crumbs out for them, and they went on to find more food?
